MILITARY INQUIRY.
EX-FRENCH MINISTER CHARGED. ALLEGED SUBVERSIVE ACTIONS. (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m). LONDON, July 28. The Vichy correspondent of the British United Press says that a, military court has opened an inquiry into M. Man del’s activities. This is at the orders of the Petain Government. It is reliably stated that the innuiry involves charges that M. Mandel (who was formerly Colonial Minister) attempted to communicate with Mr A. Duff-Cooper and Viscount Gort against the. interests of France, which is punishable with death. Mr Duff-Cooper and Viscount, Gort, it is alleged, arrived at Casablanca by seaplane and sought contact with M. Mandel, who was aboard the. Massiiglia. The French authorities are reported to have ordered the seaplane to leave. M. Mandel was held aboard the Massiglia. The court is believed to be seeking to. determine! whether he planned to fly to England to join General de Gaulle’s group. M. Daladier is reported to be held in incommunicado in a hotel at Marseilles. M. Reynaud (the ex-Premier) is under house arrest near Vichy. MM. Campinchi and D'elhos (former Ministers) are under strict surveillance in North Africa.
