ASHBURTON v. CANTERBURY.
HOME TEAM LEADING BY 16-0. The Ashburton County representative Rugby football team met a Canterbury team on the Ashburton Domain this afternoon and the match was watched by a largo number of people. At half-time the Ashburton team was leading by 16 points to nil. Ashburton attacked from the kickoff. The hacks gained possession and P. O’Reilly fell over to score. D. White’s kick hit - the post. Ashburton .... 3 Canterbury ... ... 0 Some hard t ovon play followed. Neither set of hacks wore handling safely. Mishandling by Ashburton allowed the Canterbury forwards to break through. A twenty-five gave relief to Ashburton. The Canterbury backs moved neatly on two occasions', and were unfortunate not to score. Ashburton forwards broke through, but again Canterbury attacked.
From a serum on t ho Canterbury twenty-five D. White at half-hack lot* Ashburton cut; in cleverly and almost reached the line. His out pass went
astray. Ashburton forwards and backs combined in a promising passing movement which brought play almost to the Canterbury line. From a subsequent scrum A. Sampson broke through a tackle to score. I>. White converted. Ashburton Canterbury 0 Garrett (Canterbury) kicked across the field while on attack and J. Doig broke through, making a fine solo effort before passing to ®. Lemon, who scored. J. Doig converted. Ashburton ... ••• 13 Canterbury 0 After a few minutes Canterbury attacked strongly. Ashburton, however, came back well and Sampson almost went over. A penalty kick was awarded to Ashburton in a handy position and three mono points were added by White. Ashburton I<> Canterbury ... ••• 0 From the kick-off all the Canterbury backs handled, but Ashburton held up the attack. Garrett kicked a penalty goal for Canterbury, but as there was a man iu front this kick was disallowed. Ashburton, led by D. Lemon, brought play back up the field again. The score at half-time was: — Ashburton 10 Canterbury 0
