CRIME IN NEW ZEALAND. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, July 26. New Zealand showed a higher percentage of offences reported during 1939 than for the previous year, according to the annual report on the Police Force lor the year ended December 31, 1939. which has bnen presented to the House of Representatives. Offences reported during the year numbered 46,375, an increase of 2070 on the total for the previous year. The proportion of offences to population rose.from 2.73 per cent, to 2.83. The main increases shown are 1 : Petty theft, 770 cases; drunkenness, 489 cases; burglary, 421 cases. Finos totalled £45,493, arising from 24,696 convictions. There are now 57,749 finger paints in the New Zealand collection, which to date has been responsible for tlie* identification of 7472 persons. The report adds that it is hoped to introduce women police in the very ■near future. Dealing with the loaded firearm danger, the report discloses that there wore six fatal and five lion-fatal accidents recorded during the year due to loaded firearms boing carried in motor vehicles. Eleven accidents, four ot them fatal, were traced to leaving firearms and ammunition within reach of children.
