WOMEN WEAR TIN HATS
WAR DISCIPLINES FASHION. Those who eixpeeted war to sw'oep aside, fashion must be astonished to find how steadily it continues to flourish. Women.may take to tin ha,t,s, hut •not without contriving by some means or other to- have them an attractive shape. They may take to- uniform, but not without a beautifying foundation beneath to proclaim the line feminine. The truth is that fashion’s roots strike deep, and war cannot destroy but only shape them. That women have not gone glumly into a, uniform eclipse proves what a truly irresistible force in life fashion is. One manifestation of it is the tenacious way women are clinging- to corsets in spite, of their more active and less fashionable lives. It means that the, fashion instinct, the instinct for beauty, in fact the, whole feminine morale, is in no way impaired by the crises it lias faced. Had it slackened in any, way, the corsetry trade would have been."the first to notice it, silica most women are apt to he careless first about foundations from the misguided notion that they matter least because they are not seen. But the truth is that the corsetieres are busier near than they have been for some time. Tlicjrc is another significance in this reluctance to cast aside the corset. It points to the extent to which the modern foundation has proved its worth in maintaining woman’s health, poise and well-being. Certainly, present conditions render her more grateful to such valuable services. The average active woman looks much better, and feels much better, when her muscles are supported and her flesh controlled hv a .scientific figure -bracing foundation. Moreover, it is of tremendous psychological value to her to know that her figure is looking and feeling as well as art and science can combine to make it, and that her body is being given the extra support it required for the extra strain it is being asked to hear.
