WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.
MT. SOMERS BIRTHDAY PARTY. The tenth birthday party of the Mount Somers Women's Institute was well attended, representatives being present from the Mothvten, Staveley, Mayfield and Ashburton 'institutes, and the'Alford Forest and Anama- Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. The president (Mrs L. H. lluddock) presided. Proceedings were opened with a prayer for peace. Mrs Mcßae gave an interesting talk on the work of the Institute during ' wartime. The president of the Federation- (Mrs M. A. Constable) also spoke of sacrifices during the war period, and explained the value ot the Institute meetings as a means of -bringing chteer and brighter outlook in times of distress. _ . . Items wore given by Misses Minting and Shimmin (novelty dances), D. and L. Wightman (pianoforte duct) and Mrs McLean and Mrs Quantock. . The Loweliffe Institute ga.vp a ten-minute sketch, “At the Conference.” An enjoyable afternoon tea was served. The president thanked Miss E. Chambers and M. Morgan for making the cake, and Airs Li, "Wilson. Visiting members lit the candles and conveyed greetings. Mrs H. Alexander -cut "the cake. A competition was won by Mesda-mes L. Wilson and W. Grieve. The cup for most points (luring tine year was won by Aliss L. M ightman. Other competitions resulted: Arts and crafts, Miss H. "Wightman 1, Mrs L Wilson 2; cookerv,-Miss L. Wight- , man 1, Misses JX and H. Wightman and Mrs L, Hood (er;ual) 2: flowers, Miss L. Wightman 1. Airs L. Hood 2; vegetables, Airs E. W. Roberts 1, Airs L. Tinkler 2.
