PICTURE SHOW.
THE ASHBURTON HIGH SCHOOL. THIRD OF 1 A SERIES SHOWN. Good entertainment was provided: for parents and friends of pupils of the Ashburton. High. School last evening when the third of a. series of evening picture show's was given in the School Assembly Hall. The programme, which consisted of sound films interspersed with selected records, was as follows: “The War in Europe,” showing authentic photographs of the German, invasion of Poland and the mobilising! of men; in the Allied countries; “Golden Coast,” a trawl film of the West Coast of the South Island; “Water Power,” a review of potential supplies of natural energy stored in the world's waterways ; “Glaciers,” a Tourist Department film of the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers: “Imperial City of China,” a Fitzpatrick Traveltalk showing Peking, the Great Wall of China., and some of the customs of the Chinese nation. The first part of the programme concluded with a comedy cartoon entitled, “The' Pirate Ship.”
Thei main film, which' was “The Law of Tong,” provided good entertainment and at the same time gave a good account of life in the Chinese quarter of a big city, the tolerance of the Oriental race, and the! work of the Salvation Army.
The proceeds will he devoted to defraying the cost of screening educational sound films free of charnel to all pupils of the school each week throughout the year. The wide rangte of films available, embracing >as it does all branches of science, literature and the arts, supplies a valuable aid in the education of the pupils who find it both interesting and instructive.
