“TIMID AND INADEQUATE.” TRESS COMMENT IN LONDON. LONDON, July 24. “The Times” describes the Budget as timid, and says that- the proposals are quite inadequate- from the viewpoint of preventing a Continuation and acceleration of the rise -in . the general level of prices, because they do not j touch by far the greater fraction of - the extra incomes and wages which are a counterpart of the increased excess of Exchequer disbursements- over receipts in the current year. This excess will be spent on a diminishing quantity of goods and so invites inflation unless far .more drastic steps are contemplated, apart from the Budget, to divert moneys back to the Exchequer. The “Financial News” in a leading article, asks: “Why has this of all Bud- - gets' been rushed? Sir Kingsley Wood may intend to do mom next time, but tlre<re are very good reasons to conclude that wo will certainly have inflation by the front door.” It adds that wars are not financed by to- morrows and might-have-bec-ns. The “Manchester Guardian” says: “Thte Budget would have filled the Bill last April, hut it is shockingly inade-_ quate to-dav. It misses a great psvehological opportunity of demanding sacrifices when the public is never inord Koady to make sacrifices.”
