Authoritative quarters in the Vatican state that the Pope has abandoned hope of a peace settlement between the Axis Powers and Britain, following the British Government’s' response to Hitler. According to these circles feelers which were made after Hitler’s speech through Vatican channels have been negative. The Pope is therefore expected to deliver shortly a homily of sorrow, in which he will exhort the faithful throughout the world to pray for peace as the only solution for termination of the war.
