PATRIOTIC EFFORT.
POSITION OF THE RED CROSS.
WRONG IMPRESSION CORRECTED.
To remove a wrong impression which may have boon caused by the report of the meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, winter sports bodies, and other local organisations on Monday evening to consider a scheme for raising funds for soldiers’ gifts and comforts, two officials of the Ashburton Centre of the Red Cross Society made a statement to a “Guardian” reporter yesterday afternoon.
They pointed out that the body as a whole had never promised support, so that it could therefore not be withdrawn. i
As the society has already a full programme of work ahead of it, the delegates to the meeting did not feel in a position to commit it to a further task. ,
Nevertheless, they stated, individual members were in favour of the raffle and would give all possible assistance.
