WATERSIDERS’ WAGES.
REPLY TO HON. A. HAMILTON. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, June 13. The president, -of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr J. Flood) said the attack made on waterside workers by the Leader oi the Opposition (the Hon. A. Hamilton) was unwarranted, particularly in view of the fact that the men for some weeks past had been working extended hours whenever they had been requested to do so by the Waterfront Control Commission. There was no 40-hour week on the waterfront, and never had been; but the men offered their services from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. or midnight when necessary, and in many instances had worked long after midnight, and been back on the job at 8 a.m. “Surely, Mr Hamilton will admit that these long hours are a contribution towards the New Zealand war effort.” The increase in wages granted by the commission was purely an overdue wage adjustment, concluded Mr Flood.
