FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” June 13, 1890) Wednesday Half-holiday—At. a meeting of shop assistants and others held last evening at Mrs Pearson’s rooms, Triangle, to,, consider the rei-establish-ing of the Wednesday half-holiday in Ashburton, although the meeting was net altogether a representative one, yet a good number rolled up. and. several apologies were received froni, assistants. It was decided to ask the sympathy and counsel of employers to aid this movement, and in order to carry out this suggestion it was nroposed that the Rev. Scott, Mr Collier, r and Mr Segers be asked to wait upon the business houses and solicit their .opinions. Mr H. H. Stephens, who accepted the office of secretary -pro tern, was instructed to inform those <To.ntlemen of the wishes of the meeting, which was then adjourned until further notice.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, (From the “Guardian ” June' 13, 1915) New Zealand Hospital.Ship—The following is a copy of a. telegram received at the' “Guardian” Office today: “The Editor, Ashburton “Guardian,” Ashburton. —I am directed by .the Governor to thank your very much for .your generous donation of £709 9s, which amount was the; splendid result of your appeal •* in the “Guardian” for funds for the hospital ship.—o.G., Melmore, A.D.0.” Garments for British Children —The ladies o.f Ashburton arid the surrounding districts have for some time past been engaged in making garments for thei infants of British soldiers and sailors, and these articles will be on view' in St. Stephen’s Schoolroom next Tuesday afternoon. The first instalment will be forwarded to Lady French, and as the -work of filling another case, will be immediately’ proceeded with, it is to be hoped that many willing helpers will come forward to give their assistance to such a meritorious object.
