LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Juno 12, 1800) The Hounds. —The Ashburton hounds met at Methven on June 10. After “throwing off” in one of the Springfield paddocks, a hare was soon found, but escaped after giving the field a short merry gallop. A fresh haire was soon started, a good run resulting across Messrs Ulyett and McKendry’s properties, and thence across the 'Sydenham reserve to the railway. where she lost. The hounds* however, were taken back, and again picked up the scent in one of Mr Ulyett’s paddock, and after a rattling run round two of Mr Cameron’s paddocks, puss was killed. The . day being hot, and very trying to both horses and hounds, it was agreed that all had had enough and a return was made for home. The scent held well over the grass land, but it was very poor on plough and stubble.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” June 12, .1915). Italy at War —The Italians, on entering Monfaleone, discovered that the fleet’s bombardment had demolished a huge poisonous gas factory, with pipes already laid towards the trenches. A dirigible on June 9, bombed the torpedo works and submarine factory at the Dunubuis navy yard at Fiume; it also bombed a factory near the town where Germany’s submarine are. being pieced together. Austrian torpedoboats chased the dirigible, and the latter’s crew, finding they could not escape, ignited the dirigible and jumped into the sea, and were captured. More . Volunteers—Another batch of volunteers from Ashburton will. leave to join the 'Seventh Reinforcements of the Expeditionary Force this evening. The train leaves at 6.30 p.m., prior to which the men will be accorded a civic send-off on the platform, when his Worship the Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith), the Rev. J. R,. Bur gin and Mr H. F, Nicoll will address the. gathering.
