EARTH TREMORS.

WHANGAREI STARTLED. (Per Press Association). WHANGAREI. March 15. Although the air was perfectly calm a. series of muffled booming noises between 8.30 and 9 o’clock last night startled many people in Wliangarei and district. Some residents report a long tremor similar to an earthquake, though earthquakes are practically unknown in Northland. The Mayor said that the bed on which he was resting shook perceptibly and his little grniul-daugliter ran into the room asking what was the matter. Inquiries to day revealed no explosion or similar cause of the visitation, which is exciting much speculation.
