VETERANS AT PLAY. CENTENNIAL CUP MATCH. AUCKLAND, This Day. Wellington compiled 202, under perfect conditions, in the Veterans’ cricket match against Auckland for the Centennial Cup. Both sides contained several international players, and the game created keen interest. A leature of the play was a ehaneelc'ss 101 by F. W. Gilligan, of Wellington, whoso splendid stroke play provided an object lesson. His century occupied M 8 minutes and included six boundaries. The fielding of the Auckland side was very sound, and the batsmen could take few risks. W. Rountree, the veteran international wicketkeeper, gave a sterling display, allowing only two deliveries to pass him, while his stumping had lost none of its speed. Coates and G. A. TWO IMPORTANT MATCHES. The cricket season in the Ashburton County is now rapidly drawing to a close. Jn the senior grade the competition was completed last week, and •there was only one match to-day between Technical and the Rest, Fairfield having defaulted to Old Boys in the match which was postponed from March 2. The junior and third grade competitions were completed to-day. Two important matches have, however, still to be played by Ashburton teams during the next three weeks. During the Easter holidays Ashburton will play a Minor Association match against the West Coast at Greymouth, and on April 6 Technical will play the winners of the South Canterbury senior competition for the Bristol Cup at Timaru.
