FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 15, 1890) Ashburton Guards—The final, meeting of the Ashburton Guards was held at the Royal Hotel last evening. There was a large attendance of members, Captain Sparrow presiding. The- chairman reported a satisfactory balance to the credit of the company, also that the rifles, etc., had been inspected by Major N*vvall and formally handed oyer for the use of the Rifle Club. It wsis decided. that the Club be named the Ashburton Riflo Club, and the following officers were appointed:—Captain, Mr J. Keir; treasurer, Mr \V. Spai’row; secretary, Mr C. Chapman; committee, Messrs Morrison, Marsen, Leitch and Baker. German Preparations—The “Post” asserts that the Reichstag will he asked to vote for the creation of seventy four new batteries of artillery.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 15, 1915) / The Dresden Sinks—The Admiralty reports that on Sunday morning the cruisers Glasgow, Orama and Kent caught tho Dresden near Juan Fernandez, off the coast of Chile. After five minutes, the Dresden hauled down her colours, displaying the white flag. She was much damaged, and on fire. Finally a magazine exploded, and she sank. The crew were saved. There were no British casualties or damage. Invasion of England—London: A society has been established in Germany to receive subscriptions for the purchase of presents for troops when they land in Eingland. It is calculated this will cast out doubts as to the ability of the Germans to invade Englahd. > The Samoan Garrison—The Hon. James Allen states that the Samoan garrison will return shortly, and after their arrival a relief force will bo .despatched. Some leave will- he. given "to the men on their return from Samoa, and they will then proceed to Trentham to join the Fifth Contingent.
