THE WEATHER.
RAIN THREATENS AGAIN TO-DAY HEAVY WIND LAST NIGHT. (Rain: fell almost continuously on Saturday afternoon, totalling 35 points, but during the eyening cleared off. Yesterday tho weather was cool. In the evening a north-west wind rose to gale force, damaging orchards in the town. Three telegraph lines at Mayfield and one at Hinds were damaged and one electric power pole in tho town and another at Wheatstone fell. The weather was warm and sunny this morning, but at mid-day the sky became cloudy, and shortly afterwards rain was falling.
At 2 o’clock the sun again shone, and a strong north-west wind was blowing. The maximum temperature yesterday, 67.4 degrees, was considerably higher than the 55.2 degrees on Saturday. The minimum reading yesterday of 42.6 was also slightly higher than the 37.5 on the previous day. The minimum on thq grass was 32.6.
The barometer this morning registered 29.22 inches, compared with 29.56 yesterday morning.
RAIN AND FROST AT MT. SOMERS
Beneficial rain fell at Mount Somers at the week-end. After the continuous winds of the past week, it was needed for root crops. A total of 78 points fell. The second frost (3 degrees) of the present year was registered yesterday morning. Temperatures have been low, light snowfalls being experienced in the hiil country, while snow fell almost to the foothills oil Saturday. TO-DAY’S FOR ECASH. WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather:— An anti-cyclone is centred to the north and u rather deep depression is passing in the south. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: — A change to strong south-westerly to southerly 'winds probable to-night. Weather fine to-day but becoming cold and showery with the southerly change. Seas slight but rising tomorrow.
