DRINKING FOUNTAIN.

THE CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL. DESIGNS TO BE CONSIDERED. Having decided, on the outbreak of war, that the centennial memorial which was to have taken the form of a swimming bath in the Domain, and was to have cost between £2500 and £BOOO, should be dropped, the Ashburton Borough Council later decided that a drinking fountain should take its place, and at its meeting last evening a sketch plan of a fountain was considered. It was agreed that the fountain should he placed in Baring Square East, midway between the Post Office and Havelock Street and just inside the fence ijne. The plan presented last evening called for a concrete structure estimated to cost £6O, and members were of the opinion that the Council could spend fully £2O or £3O more than that on a fountain. It was agreed that decision should be deferred till further designs have been submitted.
