RUSSIAN COMMUNIQUE.
STRENGTHENING OF DEFENCES. HELSINKI, January 11.
A Finnish communique states: “The Russians are strengthening their defences on the Karelian Isthmus. We dispersed a battalion, killing 200 and capturing 40 at Ruhtinaaki, north-west of Lake Ladoga. Our troops, advancing on Raate, cleared an area to the frontier from Suomussalmi. “Enemy aeroplanes carried out minor unsuccessful raids on coastal objectives. “The Finnish forces at Lake Ladoga and Koivisto participated in land operations.” CHANGE IN COMMISSION. 1 (Received /Phis Day, 9.5 a.m.) MOSCOW, January 11. The Air Commissar (M. Kaganova itch) has been transferred to an unspecified post, being replaced by M. Shakhurin. FRENCHWOMAN IMPRISONED. DEFENDING SOVIET IN SCHOOL. (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.) PARIS, January 11. A woman teacher has been sentenced to four months imprisonment for having attempted to defend the Soviet in the classroom.
