SEAMEN DECORATED.
SHIP’S FIGHT WITH U-BOAT. LONDON, December 1. Among five recipients of the decoration officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British E'mpijre is 'Captain White, who com rinded the Stonepool in the first straight light in this war between a defensively armed merchantman and a U-boat. On sighting the U-boat the Stonepool manned her gun in about two minutes and exchanged shot for shot with the enemy with guns of similar calibre, at a. fair rate of fire.
The, shooting was good and the fifteenth shot may well have hit or damaged the U-boat, whose thirteenth or fourteenth shot holed the Stonepool two feet above the water-line. Captain Wliitei, /by his resolute and skilful action, saved his ship. Able Seaman Haytor, of the Stonepool, was also created an 0.8. E., and the. report accompanying the issue, of the award says that discipline was excellent and the gun-layers and the gun’s crew did well. —British Official Wireless.
