AMAZING FEAT

TWO NEW ZEALAND PILOTS. DAMAGED PLANE SAVED. RETURN FROM A RAID. (United Press Association —Copyright.) LONDON, November 29. Two New Zealanders, a schoolmaster from (jisborne, and a woolbuyer from Masterton, were the heroes of an amazing feat of airmanship after the raid on northwest German on Monday.

They said they saw a blinding yellow flash and heard a “big bang” when flying at a height of 2000 feet. They thought they were being attacked by fighter aircraft. Their machine went round and round in uncontrollable circles, dropping at an alarming rate. A fall into the sea seemed inevitable and the pilots prepared their collapsible dinghy when they saw that only the framework remained of the top port wing, and half the fabric of the starboard wing had gone. The pilot’s right arm was temporarily paralysed after he safely landed at the home base, because of the effort of controlling the plane. “The Instinct of self-preservation pulled us through,” he said. “Anyhow, I would have been a nit-wit to let her fall into the sea after pulling her out of that drop through space.”—British Official Wireless.
