ASHBURTON RACES

THE SUMMER MEETING. QUEEN OF SONG WINS HANDICAP. NOT OUT SUCCESSFUL. Though the conditions were not the best, there was a large attendance at the summer meeting of the Ashburton County Racing Club to-day. A strong wind from the north kept the sky overcast and there was a threat of rain at, times. The fields were rather on the small side, but the racing was interesting all through. The Club’s arrangements' were such as to provide a maximum of enjoyment and comfort for patrons. Items were presented at intervals by the Ashburton Silver Band. Results up to the time the “Guardian” went to press wore:—

Not Out soon went to the front and stayed there all' the way. In the earlier stages Auctor was second with Twenty Grand and The Duel together. At the entrance to the straight The Duel was showing up fast, and Scold was running up, but too wide out. Not Out won by a length and a half from Twenty Grand, with Auctor a head away, third. Merry March was fourth. Time, 1.25 l-o.

Queen Beth went out at the start and was soon two lengths ahead of Turncoat, with Royal Lassie next. In the reshuffle in the straight, Lord Lynn moved up and was second from Queen Beth, only a head back. Don Roy was third, threo lengths back, and Turncoat was fourth. Time, 59 l-ssec. Soon after the start the leaders were Girl Pat, Kohua, Fragment, Mervyn Derby and Golden River. At the back, Fragment was leading from Gii'l Pat and Golden River. Coming into the straight Scenic Gem and Kohua came suddenly to the front from Scapa Flow and Fragment, but the latter came again and won by two lengths from Golden River, with Kohua a head back, third. Fourth place was filled by Scenic Gem. Times, 3.27 3-5, 3.29, 3.29 1-5. TINWALD HANDICAP. Of £200; second horse £35 and third horse £ls from the stake. (Minimum weight, 7st. Racing together, Wine Card and Swordstick were the first to show out, well in front. At the straight Wine Card was leading from Queen of Song, which was challenging strongly, and Swordstick. Queen of Song came on easily and won by a length from Swordstick, with Parquet third, half a length back. Spartan was fourth. Time. 2.6 3-5. WINCH'MORiF HACK HANDICAP. Of £110; second horse £l2 and third horse £8 from the stake. Minimum weight, 7st 7lbs. Six furlongs.

At the. entrance to the straight Plumage was showing some speed, but Lord Midas wont on to win by two lengths from Dinah Dhu, with Great Legion, a length back, third. Rebellion was fourth.
