ST. JAMES THEATRE. “CALLING DR. KILDARE.” The adventures of the young medicodetective: introduced in “Young Dr. Kildare” are continued in the second of the series, “Calling iDr. Kildare,” now showing at the St. James Theatre. Lew Ayres again plays the title role, with Lana Turner and Lionel Barrymore, right, prominently involved in the plot of the new film. Also included in the cast are La,mine Day, Nat Pendleton, Samuel S. Hinds, Lynne Carver and Emma 'Dunn. In “Calling Dr. Kildare” you will see the young doctor turn detective, capture a murderer, and clear an innocent man. You will see the veteran physician cure a little crippled boy, not with medicine but with practical psychology. You will see the young doctor led astray by infatuation for beautiful Lana. Turner, to bo rescued by a clever ruse of the canny old doctor who is his friend and adviser.

The hectic life in a great hospital, the struggles of science, the turbulent night life of New York, all combine to give you thrills, heart throbs and comedy in this fast-moving- romance. The associate programme is of a particularly high entertainment standard comprising the latest news services, a Pete Smith subject on how to prepare a ’•'icnic meal “Penny’s Picnic” a. cartoon and in “The Giant of Norway,” Fritjof Nansen, the man to whom thousands of refugees owe their lives is eulogised. Completing the first half is the latest “March of Time” entitled “Inside the Maginot Line” here is shown the greatest defence work yet conceived, both above and below ground, opportunity should be taken by all section of the community to see this comprehensive and authentic film of the Allies bulwark 125 miles long.

OVERSEAS BAND FOR METHVEN.

Tut Coltman and bis Australian Swing Band are to visit Methven next Thursday, when a hall will he held at the Methven Town Hall. As this is the only visit this famous hand will be able to make in the district (they are journeying north in a few weeks’ time), it will be in the nature of a. send-off night and the opportunity should not bo missed to hear and see them. The band lias tyeen playing at the Frascati Cabaret, Christchurch, for the last six months and broadcasting over station 3YA w'eekly and are well known for their outstanding ability to provide the best in dance music, modern and oldtime.

In addition to instrumental and vocal specialties the band features novelty and comedy.—One in particular is always very popular, namely—“ Tire Villain of the Piece” and in a novelty number the leader of the band Tut Cbltman introduces each member of the combination to the audience. Everything points to a most enjoyable night and should not be missed by any means. The: band will be leased 1 to play request numbers and those people who have written to 3YA for request numbers will be especially welcome.
