LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian.” Nov, ?5. 1380) African Lakcsr—Zanzibar: Tnfoiimation has been received that “Stanley has determined the area of some of the lakes in the territory through which he passed. He found that Lake Albert Nyanza extends to within 158 miles of the Lake Tanganyika, while Lake Victoria Nyanza is 270 miles in length and has a superficial area of, 27,000 square miles. - '-•* Deep Soundings—Sydney: H.M.S. Egeria. has arrived here. After re-fit-ting she will resume her surveying operations. Between Fiji and the Navigator Islands she reached the deepest soundings ever met with hv- a JBptish vessel —4530 fathoms. - t « * TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 25, 1914) Camp at Show Grounds —Considerable preparations are being made for the infantry camp, which commences to-morrow afternoon. This jnorning some of the Defence. Staff, accompanied by local officers, visited tbe Ashburton Show Grounds, which 5 the local Agricultural and Pastoral Association have placed at thok disposal! of the authorities, and planned out the camp. Owing to - the- large -buildings in the grounds, them is adequate'room for the men to eat and sleep under a roof should the weather render .-.it necessary. The camp is' being' held for the country members of the local infantry company, and men present, at it for the weak will not need to drill during the week —an arrangement which should appeal to farmers and employers as well as to the men themselves. While the primary object of the camp is instruction, the social enjoyment of the men is not being lost" sight of, as several concerts in the evenings are being arranged. On Sunday; morning a church parade, headed by the band of the South Canterbury Infantry Regiment, will he held at St. Stephen’s Church, in which the men in camp, as well as the town territorials and cadets, will participate. Self-Denial Appeal—The Ashburton Salvation Army self-denial _ returns, when completed, will this year total £4OO, an increase of £135 on. last year’s figures. This must be considered very satisfactory to the officers of the local branch of the Army.
