SUMMER ROSES.

FLOWERING IN. ASHBURTON. FINE DISPLAY- IN DOMAIN. Although roses are later to. bloom in Ashburton this season on account of the recent long period of dry weather, many gardens are now becoming bright with these colourful flowers, which will bo helped along greatly by the fain of the past day or two. For a first-class display of roses one has to go no further than the Domain, for there the plots are already bright with the. first bloomings. The roses near the bowling green are further advanced in flower than those along, the walk next to the Ashburton tennis courts, and with multicoloured noniqsia all around, this corner of the Domain is claiming much attention' at the present time. In a week or two the rose walk, made possible by the excellent response to a public appeal, will be at its best, and will provide a first-class show right up to Christmas time, with: another blooming in February. The most interesting feature of this long plot of roses is the wide range of varieties, - nearly every type to be seen in local gardens being represented there as well a sfrne species from other districts.. The area is laid out in Triangular plots with 21 roses in each section. Tlie border is 150 yards long, and there are 58 plots with very few duplications in types. Numerous sorts of the best-known roses are spaced be-« tween other more uncommon and valuable varieties, so that the whole dsplay will be an outstanding blaze of colour. Behind the main lot a picturesque background of climbing hybrid tea roses will enhance the effect.
