LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guavdian”Nov. 23. 1S89) Half-Holiday Quest ioito-Lettor to Editor: Sir—l was much, pleased to read your stirring.article in Saturday’s paper on the weekly half-holiday. It would he a great pity to miss this chance of securing such a boon. I watched with interest the establishment of the weekly half-holiday in another town of New Zealand. It lias now become a. regular .thing, there. I inteoid to contribute my mite toward assisting the movement in Ashburton by transferring my custom to those who observe* the half-holiday. I would urge all who have any desire to promote the well-being of their fellow- creatures to severely let alone those who are endangering the success of this much needed arrangement. As bearing on this subject, I would refer youu' readers to 1 Corinthians, . 6th chapter, 11th verse. I am —County Customer. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO . \ •’ ; (From the “Guardian” Nov, 23, 1914) Sir Joseph Ward—That the old-time Liberal spirit has not died out in Ashburton was very , evident last night. When the leader of the Liberal Party (Sir Joseph Ward) appeared on the stage of the Theatre Royal he was faced and flanked by a. crowd' of over 1000 people, others clustered on the doorsteps, and a good number who wished to hear the address could not get within hearing distance of the doors. It hiust have been very gratifying to the leader of-the Opposition to receive such a greeting in a. constituency that is supposed J have renounced its faith, and if appearances are not deceptive there is a possibility of the constituency again flying the old flag. Sir Joseph had' nothing new to tell the big gathering, but he made the most of the advantage' which a personal unfolding of his policy gives. His policy seems bigger and more real than ever when expressed in terms of tho originator, and many of the audience last night went away with the-impres-sion that at last they had substantial political fare to feast, upon.
