EXCEPTION TAKEN.

STATEMENT BY CLERGYMAN.

RETURNED MEN’S ATTITUDE. •C Per Press Association). INVERCARGILL.. November 20. Strong exception to a statement by the Rev. C. J. Tocher at the Presbyterian General Assembly, Christchurch, to-day, was taken by the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association, which passed the following resolution: — ' “That gravei exception be taken to the statement made by Mr Tocker at Christchurch, in which he said that the attitude of the Returned Soldiers’ Association seemed to represent the propaganda of the liquor trade and not the considered opinion of the Association. It is pointed out that Mr Tocker is not a returned soldier and as far as is known, has shown no intelligent interest in, the problems confronting soldiers in general. The decision to support wet canteens was arrived at by men who have had experience in camps and on active service of all the conditions under which the soldier has to live, and we fail to see the qualifications of Mr Tocker to criticise the general opinion of the Returned Soldiers’ Association om the subject.”
