TOWN DESTROYED
FIRE SWEEPS OIL PORT. EIGHT HUNDRED CASUALTIES. WORKERS’ HUTS BURNED. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 1.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, November 14. The correspondent of the Associated Press of America at Caracas (Venezuela) reports that the important oil port of Lagunillas, on Lake Maracibo, has been destroyed by fire. Eight hundred are dead or injured. Two 'thousand oil workers’ huts were destroyed. The flames are sweeping the oily waters of the lake where the town is built. RELIEF OF THE INJURED. HURRIEDLY-ARRANGED CAMPS. (Received This Day, 1.40 p.m.), 4 CARACAS', November 14. The authorities at Maracibo with the co-operation of the oil companies, which operate' inuidireds of oil wells drilled in the lake bed, rushed all available boats toi Lagunillas. The injured were taken to relief camps hurriedly established in nearby towns. The Government has sent, by aeroplane, doctors and nurses. The town has long been condemned as insanitary and dangerous but all efforts to get the population to move to the model village have been _um successful, -the latter remaining untenanted.
