LOSS OF MERCHANTMEN SOME VICTIMS OF SUBMARINES Mines and submarines combined to make a bad day for Britain in the naval sphere of the war. A destroyer sank through striking a mine, fortunately with small loss: of life. Several merchant vessels were lost, some as the result of torpedo attacks and others through striking mines or submerged wreckage. » ' c A Norwegian tanker was torpedoed without warning and sunk, the captain and 16 of the crew being missing.
