THIRTEEN CHARGES
TWO BROTHERS BEFORE COURT. THEFTS AT ASHfiURTON. (Spocial to the “ Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. - At the Police Court yesterday before Mr E. C. Lcvvcy, S.M., thirteen charges, involving the alleged conversion or theft of five motor-vehicles, six alleged theft of motor accessories, and materials, the alleged theft ol two machine-guns from the Defence Department, and an alleged case of breaking and entering with theft were preferred against James Alervyn Philp, a blacksmith, aged 20, and William Lewis Philp, a labourer, aged 24. Air D. W. Russell appeared for the accused.
The charges were.:—Conversion of a motor-truck, valued at £650, the propei’ty of the Western Timber Company ; the theft of an oilskin coat and leggings valued at £3 10s, the property of Norman William Carter; the theft of a motor-cycle head-lamp, tools, parts and accessories of a total value of £2O 2s, the property of Douglas Malcolm Meredith; the theft at Geraldine of a motor-truck valued at £320, the property of the Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd.; the theft of a generator and equipment, valued at £63 9s, the property of the Western Timber Company; conversion of a motor-cycle valued at £BS, the property of Douglas Malcolm Meredith; breaking and entering the warehouse of A. S. Paterson and Company, Moorhouse avenue, and theft of goods to the value of £130; the theft at Ashburton of a motor-ear battery valued ajf £1 17s, the property of Sidney Osbourne; conversion at Ashburton of a motor-car valued at £5lO, fives property of Donald Robertson, conversion of a sports' motor-ear valued at £llOO, the property of Walter Jonathan Scott, the theft , at Ashburton of two Hotchkiss .303 machine-guns, two tripod mountings, two Hotchkiss spare barrels, two Hotchkiss spare-parts bags complete with contents, and one. .303 Lee-Enfield rifle, of a total value of £ 1(36, the property of the New Zealand Government ; the theft of 110 gallons of petrol, valued at £ll, the property of Edwin Russell; and the theft of a 44-gallon petrol drum valued at 10s, the property of the Christchurch Tramway Board. Further charges against James Mervyn Philp were the conversion of a motor-cycle valued at £l2O, the property of Arthur Raymond Amtam. and the theft of motor-cycle parts valued at £4O, also the property of Amtam. Evidence was heard yesterday in respect of the charges of breaking and entering the warehouse of A .S. Paterspn and Company, the theft of motorcycle parts belonging to Douglas Malcolm Meredith, and the theft of the motor-truck belonging to the Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association. The accused pleaded not guilty to those charges and were committed to the Supreme Court for Trial.
