GIRL HIT WITH POKER.

UNCLE FINED FOR ASSAULT. (Per Press Association). WHANGAREiI, November 13. An elderly farmer, Charles Cross, of Paihia, pleaded guilty in the Kawakawa Magistrate’s Court to a charge of having assaulted his niece, aged 13, by striking her across the shoulders head and, arms with an iron poker. Accused was fined £1 10s by Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M. Evidence was given by the police that Cross was the guardian and uncle of the girl. On September 6 she had broken two windows in the home and as a result she had been struck byCross. Questioned by the Bench, Cross said that the girl was very difficult to handle and that he had not intended to hurt her, hut only to frighten her. The police evidence showed that the girl had not boon badly 7 hurt. “Even if you have experienced difficulty with the girl, that is no reason why you should strike her with a poker,” Mr Ferner said.
