SERIES OF THEFT CHARGES. TWO BROTHERS BEFORE COURT. MILITARY EQUIPMENT AT ASHBURTON. (Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The theft of two Hotchkiss machineguns, two tripod mountings, two spare barrels, and one military service rifle from the Drill Hall at Ashburton was admitted in the Magistrate’s Court today by two brothers, James Mervyn Philp, aged 20, and William Lewis Philp, aged 24. There was a long series of charges relating to the conversion of motor-cars, motor-cycles and trucks, and thefts aiid burglaries 'in Christchurch and MidCanterbury.
Both accused pleaded not guilty, and were committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
It was stated that six motor vehicles, of a total value of £2785, were converted, whilo the value of goods stolen Was £266.
