SHARP FROST TO-DAY. Although the exact degree of frost in Ashburton this morning is not known, on account of the grass thermometer in the Domain having been broken, the nio was a fairly sharp one, foy a good deal of damage was caused in local gardens. The inside reading of the thermometer showed 30.9 degrees at its minimum, and as the grass instrument usually reads four or five degrees lower, the indications are that a frost of about six degrees was experienced. Beautifully fine weather followed the frost, and conditions were nerfect in Ashburton this morning. The maximum temperature yesterday was 68.9 degrees compared with 66.2 degrees on Saturday. The barometer stood at 29.81 inches this morning, as against 29.61 inches yesterday. SHARP FROST AT METHVEN. There was a sharp frost at •Mothven last night and potatoes and early vegetables were cut to the ground. The season so far has been a disappointing ono and a good rain is badly needed. TO-DAY'S FORECAST. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government Meteorologist * at noon to-day, issued the following statement Regarding the weather:— A depression is centred to the northeast, but an anti-cyclone is moving on to the Dominion from the west. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Gamn.ru is as follows:—

Winds light to moderate and variable with south-westerlies predominating. Weather fair to fine. Temperatures cold to-night, with frosts, but moderating to-morrow. Seas slight to moderate.
