LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. \ (From the “Guardian,” Noy_._l3. J 889) Paris Exhibition —Mr Alfred. Harrison, who is touring in England and the Continent, visited the Paris Exhibition. He states in a. letter that the English section is roomy, with a fine display of rare and costly exhibits. Victoria is not well represented, neither is Tasmania, New Zealand worst of all. (She is only represented by some wool, timber, a little flax, some mineral exhibits, and a few second-ratei photographs, indeed the New Zealand Court seems to me a small and inferior remnant of the Melbourne exhibition. If it had not been for a group of primitive Maoris in wax, I quostion.whethcr it would have got anyone to look at it, and but for the discourtesy to France it would, in my opinion, have been much bettor for New Zealand not to have exhibited at all. The Americans make a. fair show in the liberal arts but excel in machinery. The exhibits in this direction are grand, particularly Edison, the inventor’s court, which is something wonderful to see. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 13. ]939) Political —The Leader of the Opposition (Sir Joseph Ward) passed through Ashburton bv the first express this morning. He will go through" to Dunedin to-dav and will deliver his first campaign speech at Winton -on- Monday evening.’ He indicated*, to i a “Guardian.” reporter that there was every possibility that he Avould deliver a speech at Ashburton: shortly, hut was unable to fix a date just at present. In regard to the coming - election. Sir Joseph was very sanguine in relation to the return of the Liberals to power. He said lie had reviewed the seats ovea* both Islands, and was satisfied that his party would go hack with a good working majority. Farmers in the North Island were giving the wholehearted support to the: Liberals and he said that although the Prime Minister was endeavouring to make party capital out of ‘‘Red-Fedism.” the farmers had not forgotten that the Government had helped to secure the return of active supporters of the “R?d-Fcd” movement.
