THIRTEENTH ANNUAL MEETING. CUP TO SOUTHERN CHIEF. POKER FACE SUCCEEDS. The Metliven Trotting Club’s thirteenth annual meeting was hip Id on the 'Mount Harding Racecourse to-day in gloriously hue weather. The track was in first-class order, and the club had its management well in hand. Several improvements' had been made since the last meeting, these including a board opposite the stand for displaying drivers’ names. The fields were large and included some very good performers. The attendance was large, and included a numerous contingent from Christchurch by rail and road. DRAYTON HANDICAP TROT. (Harness). Of £LJO, second horse to receivo £2O and third horse £lO from the stake. For unhoppled trotters that can do 3.49 or better as for 1£ miles. 12& Furlongs.

Milestone was most prominent from the start and the second horse, Queen Bertha broke coming into the straight and again going out of it, when Patti Nelson and Loyal Star were next in order. Along the back Judgment was going fast and Patti Nelson moved up nicely. Milestone went on to win by a length and a half from Lady Ede, with Peter Harvester a length back. Judgment was fourth. At the stand the leaders were Rerekohua, Baytax, Brown Tap and Virginia Girl and toward the far bend Rerekohua was still in front, Inquisition next and Star Aco showing up not far away. In tho straight Twist came to light on the outside and won by a length from Baytax, while two lengths back was Inquisition. Rierekohua was fourth. The times were 2.52, 2.52 1-5, and 2.53 1-5. METHVEN CUP. (Harness). Of £3SG 5s (Silver Fox Fur Necklet, valued 25 Guineas, donated by Patterson Ede Coy., Ltd., Christchurch, and £330; second horso to receive £SO and third horse £25 from the stake. Wee Potts shot to the front at the start, and Battlefield made a fast start too. At the back Mute led from Wee Potts, King Potts, Acuity and Loyal Pat. There was littla change down the back, but the field soon began to bunch, and in the straight. Southern Chief came through to win by 12 lengths from Cruiser, with Battlefield two lengths back third. Jackaranda was fourth. The times were: 4.26 l-(fc 4.29 2-5,. and 4.28 2-5.

Coming round to the straight Super Jack was seen to be moving up nicely. Poker Face and Lady Milne came down the straight neck and neck and the former won by a head from Lady Milne. Axspear which was three

lengths back, was bracketed with Huguenot and Palomar. Huguenot was fourth. Times: 3.29 1-5, 3.29 2-5, 3.30 2-5. MOUNT HARDING HANDICAP. (Harness).
