THE TURF.

ASHBURTON RACING CLUB. TO-MORROW’S FIELDS REVIEWED The Ashburton Racing Club’s meeting to-morrow will break the lull between the winter racing ancl spring engagements. Excellent fields have, accepted for all events. The win-and-plaeo totalisator will be in operation, and all arrangements are well forward and are in the capable hands of the secretary (Mr J. B. Nicoll). Following is a review; of the felds:— County Hurdles. Some smart hurdlers are amongst this field, and include Mount Val, Jewish Lad, Metal Bird and The Surgeon. Colonel French and Bit o’ Blue have shown promise. The best may be Mount Val, Jewish Lad, Colonel French. Novice Stakes. The usual large field, in this race for horses that have not won a race, has accepted, and many of unknown calibre are present. The favouritism is hard to forecast, but those with experience will be in demand. St. Cloud, Lord Midas, Almira and Dinah Dhu are experienced and seem to be the best gamble. St. Cloud, Lord Midas, Almira. Selma Trot Handicap. This event is very open and’ some likely youngsters may surprise. Several promising three-year-olds are engaged and will most likely dominate the race. Imperial Jade is very fast. Latest Edition and Nationalist are also speedy. The placings should include . . Imperial Jade, Latest Edition, Nationalist. Ashburton Handicap, The acceptors in this event are not up to the usual standard, bnt a good i ace should result. The Wrecker, making his first appearance in open company, will be on hand at the right end. Night Dress, in the mood, is a likely proposition, and Gay Rebel and Wine Card will be prominent. The final throe may be The Wrecker, Night Dress, Gay Rebel. John Grigg Stakes. Nine starters will parade for this event, the first two-year-old race in the South Island. The only guidance to form of these youngster? is their track work, and suggests Gold . Flight. Riccarton followers will rely on Shikari. Noko should also carry a substantial sum of money. Whiphand is another likely* contestant. The placings should include Gold Flight, Shikari, Noko. Penscroft Hack Handicap. The hack division is strongly represented here. Great Swoop will be watched closely as he is etered for the Guineas at Dunedin. Prudent Prince will also attract attention. Flame Queen, Merry March and King Gustavo have form. The public will most likely favour

Flame Queen, Merry March, Great Swoop. Spring Handicap. This event has drawn the best class field seen here for some time. Form is shown by most and some of these are Dictate, Second Innings, Paper Note, Strip, Lady Leigh, Spartan, G'ay Parade and Grey Night. Winning Rival may surprise, as she has been doing good work lately. The pick seems to be Second Innings, Lady Leigh, Winning Rival. Rakaia Trot Handicap. Allen Wrack is a recent winner and seems to be improving. Axspear and Accountant are good sorts and Siege Gun and Taruna should also be .prominent at some part of the journey. The final choice may be Axspear, Accountant, Allen Wrack.
