ST. JAMES’ THEATRE. “CONFESSIONS OF A NAZI SPY.” % •‘Tire film, ‘Confessions of a. Nazi Spy,’ is a withering attack on the present Nazi regime and on the Nazi way of thought. For some years American film producers have feared to offer any real comment on international affairs. The making of films is an expensive business; and Hollywood felt that it could pot afford to lose a market by antagonising Central Europe. Occasionally there appeared a film such as ‘Blockrfde,’ which skirted around a delicate subject in representing the civil war in Spain, but the identity of the various combatants was always carefully disguised by means of changes in uniform and studied vagueness in speech. Even so, it was found that the totalitarian Governments were touchy. They seized on such productions . and declared that these made war look hoi'rible and degraded, instead of displaying it as the glorious experience that it actually was. Thus, in spite of all precautions, the films were banned and the market lost. In the circumstances, the American studios have begun to wonder whether an open disregard for Central Europe’s feelings is, after all, not the best policy. The first result of that change of heart is Warner Bros.’ ‘Confessions of a Nazi Spy.’ ” Edward G. Robinson, Francis Lederer, George Sanders. Paul Lukas, Henry O’Neill, Lya Lys and 22 others comprise the cast in a film which provides compelling entertainment for all. The season closes definitely on Monday night.
