THE DAVIS CUP CONTEST.

AUSTRALIA’S STRAIGHT WIN.

(Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) MEXICO CITY, July 3.

Australia had a ' straight victory against Mexico in the Davis Cup contest and will now meet the United States in tho final of the American’' zone. Tho concluding singles were played to-day. A. K. Quist defeated Hernandez, 11-9, 6-3, 6-2. J. Bromwich defeated Tapia, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1. The Quist-Hernandcz match was a battle royal in the first set, in which tho Mexican led 3-2 and 8-7, _ after which tho Mexican’s lack of resistance showed. He whs worn out in the last tyro, while Quist was cool, placing beautifully. Hernandez's service was strong and his backhand excellent. ’ Although his service was still helow par Bromwich’s game generally was too strong and accurate lor Tapia. The latter was occasionally brilliant at the net. The attendance totalled 2500.

The Australians left for San Antonio at 8.20 p.m. to give an exhibition there on Wednesday. They will then go to Los Angelos.

THE ALL-ENGLAND TOURNAMENT

COOKE DEFEATS AUSTIN.

The All-England Lawn Tennis Tournament was continued at Wimbledon to-day. Results:—-

Men’s Singles Fifth Round.

Riggs (United States) defeated Mohammed (India), 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. Henkel (Germany) defeated Ivukuljevic (Yugoslavia), 6-1, 6-3, 6-2. Puncec (Yugoslavia) defeated Smith (United States), 6-0, 5-2, 6-2. Cooke (United States) defeated Austin (England), 6-3, 6-0, 6-1.

• Women’s Singles. Fourth Round.

Mdme. Sperling (Denmark) defeated Miss Saunders (England), 6-2, 0-4. Mrs Fabyan (United States), defeated Alls Little (England), 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Miss Stammers (England) defeated Madame Henrotin (France), 7-5, 6-2. Miss Jacobs (United States) defeateu Miss Dumb (England), 6-2, 7-5. Mndnme Mnthicu (France) defeated Miss Scott (England), 0-3, 4-6,. 6-2. Mdllo. Jedrzcjowska (Poland) defeated Aliss Scriven (England), G-3, 6-2.

Men’s Doubles. Third Round.

Hare and Wilde England) defeated N. V. Edwards (New Zealand) and Morton. (England), 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. Cooke surprisingly annihilated Austin in 45 minutes. He took ten games

in a row and did not allow Austin a moment to play his fluent game. Cooke drove and served terrifically.
