EXPLORATION FLIGHT.
FLYING BOAT NEAR COCOS. (United Press Association—-Copyright.) (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) \ .SYDNEY, This Day. The flying boat Cuba, owned by Dr. Richard Archbold, with Captain P. G. Tqylor as chief pilot, left Rose Bay at 3.45 p.m. on Saturday afternoon for Townsville on the first stage of the exploratory flight- of the Indian Ocean. The Guba flew north to the vicinity of Cloncurry, from which place it- set a •direct course for Port Hedland, W estorn Australia, a- distance of 2600 miles from Sydney. It arrived at 1.30 a.m. yesterday. • The Guba left Pori Hedland 10.30 a.m. (G.M.T.), and at 4.36 p.m. a radio announced its position as 530 nautical miles from Locos Island. During the flight- across Australia, which was made non-stop, intense cold was experienced, the temperature falling to well below zero. Turbulent air conditions-were reported on the first part of the flight to Cocos, but later smooth air was experienced.
