TRIBUTE BY BANDSMEN. GIFT FOR MRS H. J. CHAPMAN. , 25 YEARS OFFICIAL ACCOMPANIST®!. The helpful service given by Mrs H. J, Chapman as official aecompaniste to the Ashburton Silver Band over the last 25 years was recognised by former bandsmen who called at her home on Saturday evening and presented her with a fireside chair . bearing an inscribed si Ivor plate. Presenting the token, Mr E. J. Tucker, a foundation member present, spoke of Mrs Chapman’s willing service to the band over a. long period and traced the progress of the Ashburton Silver Band since its inception until its recent success in winning all sections in which it competed at the recent Dominion contest at Christchurch. He produced photographs of early Ashburton bands which had succeeded in contests all over New Zealand. Mrs Chapman replied, speaking or her happy association with the band. Also present were Messrs IT. B. Hoskeh, sen., G. Bowman, C. Davidson H. Del low, R. Marsden, S. Teale, F. Teak' W. Emerson, H. Anthony, C. Maynard, W. Lockheed, W. Inwood, E. U. Hosken, jun., G. Hosken, H. Griffiths, R. Clemens, G. Whiting, E. Harwood, C. Frew, and Lieutenant W. H. Osborne (the last four being senior members of the present band), and Messrs Addis, J. Maybury, and J. Walker, oi Christchurch. Letters containing good wishes were received from Messrs W. G. McDonald, R. J. Tucker, D. ft. Moore, J. Bootliroyd, H. A. Humphreys, A. Annand, J. Annand, a;id L. G. McDonald. The evening was spent as a. social, several senior members of the band giving reminiscences. The committee in, charge comprised Messrs H. Addis, of Christchurch (chairman), T. A. Bryant (secretary of the Ashburton Band Citizens’ Committee), H. Freeman, J. Russell, and A. Lees.
