COMBINED SPORTS
ASHBURTON COUNTY SCHOOLS. record Entries this year. LONG PROGRAMME IN DOMAIN. On no other occasion during the year do children of the 1 Ashburton County primary schools gather together in such numbers as on the day of their annual combined athletic sports. Almost every school, from the Rakaia to the Rangitata, is represented at this important-'rally, a feature of which is the enthusiasm of the children in the support of their respective schools, he it the biggest in the Borough or the smallest sole-charge in the country. The popularity of the meeting may well be judged by the. large entries received each year. The number this year created a record, over 2300 children taking part, compared with.just over 2000 last year. The County' School Sports Association was lucky again to-day as far as the weather was concerned, for better conditions could not have prevailed for an athletic meeting. Bright sunshine was enjoyed all day, while a pleasantly cool breeze blew fro mthe north-east. A long programme of events was commenced this morning, when most of the heats were run off. Much credit is due to the committee in charge, and the many assistants, whose work was reflected* in the satisfactory manner in which the programme was completed.
