The Defence Council’s troops drove out the Comfnunists from their positions in the eastern> district, taking 14,000 prisoners. A mysterious unconfirmed radio from Madrid states that the Communists are spreading the report that the Premier (General -Miaja) will open the gates of the city to General Franco. WITHDRAWAL OF VOLUNTEERS. PROMISES SHOULD BE HONOURED LONDON, March 9. The Secretary of State, for Foreign Affairs (Viscount Halifax), referring in the House of Lords to the assurances regarding the withdrawal of foreign troops from Spain, said he believed these would bo honoured. “I say quite clearly,” the Foreign Secretary said, “that if the contrary is the case a very serious situation will arise.”
