FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From “Guardian,” March 11,. 1889.) Sale of Horses.—The annual sale of horses bred on the Lowcliffe Estate took place yesterday at the Ashburton N Saleyards. Mr J. T. Ford (Miles and Co.) was the auctioneer. There was a large attendance, comprising dealers from Christchurch and Timaru, and a numerous body of local dealers arid farmers. Competition was spirited, and as the auctioneer was able to offer every lot “without reserve,” a very successful sale was the result, prices being considerably better than have been current at any town auction sales lately. Prices for draughts ran from £T4 to £22; from £2O to £22 being realised for several lots. The hacks varied a good deal in stamp. They also were three, and four years old and unbroken. A four, year old chestnut gelding of good style brought £J7 10s; others from £G to £l4. : • -r * • M.■ . * \ ' \ TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

He was accompanied by the Countess of Liverpool and Captain Hutton, A.p.C. The utmost interest was taken the occasion and flags were flying.on all the public buildings and on inany private establishments. The school children were given a half-day’s holiday in honour of the visit. The scene in the Domain was a very unusual and pretty one, and thle brilliantly fine day brought out a large numbqr of persons,; the light summer dresses of ladies ftiakr ing an effective picture. The civic address was presented to their Excellencies, and the Mayor delivered the welcoming speech, on an improvised platform which had been erected in the Domain on the Rose Garderi lawri, at a spot almost immediately in front of the bowding green. At the conclusion of the formal ceremonies, the vice-regal . party was entertained at afternoon tea in a large marquee behind -the , platform. •• " ’ .
