LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From “The Guardian,” March 4, 1889.) Borough Rates.—At the meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council last evening notice was given of the intention of the Council at its next meeting to strike an ordinary rate of Is in the £ on the rateable, value of all rateable property in the Borough. * Arrears of Rent.—Councillor H. Friedlander drew attention of the Mayor to the large amount of arrears of rent owing. The Mayor thought it was absurd that with tire Councils large overdraft, there should be the amount of £450 in rates and rents outstanding. He thought that proceedings for recovery shopld be instituted forthwith, regardless of persons. Or. R; Friedlander moved that unless the outstanding rents be paid within eight days the accounts would be put in the hands of the solici tar for collection. The motion was carried, . and the clerk was instructed where rents were not paid at the expiry of the eight days to set the solicitor to work.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
(From the “Guardian” March 4, 1914) Aviation —Worji. has been received in Ashburton that Mr Victor Beck will shortly visit this town to arrange for a flying exhibition by a noted aeronaut.
Visit of Lord Liverpool —The Mayor (Mr H. Davies) has received word from Captain Eastwood, Aide-de-camp to His Excellency the Governor, stating that Lord Liverpool will he accompanied by the Countess on the occasion of his visit to Ashburton and Longbeach on March 11. The vice-regal party-will arrive in Ashburton by motor-car at aboout 3 30 p.m. and will be met at the Jubilee Gates of the Domain and" conducted to the place where the official function is to be held, the spot likely to be chosen being near the rose garden.
New Meat "Works—The official opening of the Christchurch Meat Company’s new works at Pukea.iri took place to-day. A luncheon at which representatives of public bodies, and the business and farming communities, to the number of several hundreds, were the guests of the directors, was held to celebrate the occasion. The visitors included the Hon. W— Fraser, Minister of Public Works. The new works are capacious, with 90,000 feet of floor space, and fitted to handle up to 3000 lambs daily, built with all the latest methods of treating the meat export business.
