GREATER ASHBURTON.

THE INCLUSION OF ALLENTON. COUNTY SUPPORT THE PETITION. The meeting of the Ashburton County Council was continued yesterday after the “Guardian” went to press. The Ashburton Borough Council wrote that following a. request from ratepayers in the Allenton area the Council had decided to present a petition to the Governor-General to have such lands as were considered suitable for municipal control brought into the Borough. A plan marked with the new suggested boundaries was forwarded for the County Council’s information and assistance. . - _

The County Clerk said the change would not badly affect the financial position of the Riding. More money was spent in Allenton than "was collected in rates. The question of the new rates had alarmed! some people, but the position had been gone into and it was shown that in most cases the rates would be less thafi those charged at present. The Council unanimously supported the Borough Council’s petition. The Ashburton Technical High School Board requested a grant to its funds. It was agreed to make a grant of £l2 10s.

The Canterbury Progress League wrote that it had learned that the Social Science Research Bureau, a branch of the Department of Scientific arid Industrial Research, was contemplating a survey of a sociological nature in certain districts in New Zealand, and had recommended that the Ashburton County should bo the district over which the survey should he conducted, owing to the fine work that has already been done on the soil and farm management sides. The survey could- be better described as an amenities survey, that, is, it would embrace schools, libraries, halls, roads, railways, sports grounds and such other social facilities that add to the wellbeing of any community. The proposal made by the League was receiving attention and there was a reasonable prospect of a favourable decision being arrived at shortly. It was agreed to make representations on the same lines as those made by the League.

The Mount Hutt Road Board wrote that votes of its ratepayers on the question of amalgamation with the County Council would he counted on Tuesday. ,
