ST. JAMES THEATRE. The dignified swish of/peerage and its coming a. cropper in a middle-Euji’o-pean New-Deal offers a delightful theme for “The Baroness and the Butler,” which opened this fifternoon at the St. James Theatre, This Darryl F. Zanuck production for 20th Cen-tury-Fox co-stars William Powell and Annabella in a blithe screen version of the stage hit. Annabella, in her first American-made picture, believes butlers a/re born to obey . . . but debonair Bill obeys such un-butler-like impulses! She’s so proud; lie’s so proper. This film has caught the tone and flavour of an old regime—years of tradition and generations of escutcheon worship —-suddenly confronted with a blue bloods.’ dilemma in which the selfeffacing butler emerges from his cocoon to assume social equality with his noble employers. The supporting cast of “The Baroness and the. Butler” features -Helen West ley, Henry Stephenson, Joseph Schildkraut, J. Edward Bromberg, Nigel Bruce and Lynn Bari. The supports include a. comedy, camera thrills, cartoon and the latest noun. CHERTSEY BACHELORS’ DANCE. The bachelors’ dance in the Chertsey Hall was very well attended and a very good night’s dancing was much enjoyed .
