LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Doc. 3. 1888). Roadsides.—Sir—Allow me space in your columns to ask if the County Council lias any by-laws in force, against the stacking of goods, say, bags of chaff, by the roadsides for days together. Driving home the , other evening in the twilight my horse shied dangerously in a very awkward place, at a wayside beacon of this kind. The obstruction has now been in that place for three weeks-. Dead stock- as well as livestock left by the roadside should be impounded. Other dangers of travel are the wayside tethered horse the road scoop, plough and even harrows, carelessly left for night, just on,the grassy edge of the main road for riders to fall over, JL beg leave to suggest that by-laws against these dangerous nuisances, for the causing of which there is no sort of excuse, be posted at. the end of the traffic bridge, and that offenders he made amenable thereto. —Viator.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Dec. 3, 1.913) The Strike.—-The manager of the Ashburton Dairy Factory Company, Ltd., this morning received word that all the company’s butter had been cleared from the cool stores at Lyttelton and shipped, the Rimutaka, taking 2100 boxes and the Corinthic 600 boxes, for the London market. The value of the two shipments is estimated at £7650. This news is very- welcome, and has relieved the management, of much anxiety. Suppliers’ cheques will, as a consequence; be disbursed on Saturday. Christmas Stocks.—The news that the Christmas fruits for New Zealand are lying on Australian wharves, and with little chance of reaching the Dominion before the festive season, lias not caused a great deal of concern locally. Most of the merchants have gpod stocks on hand, and large quantities of dried and preserved, frttits are said to be stored in Wellington. Customers may, however, have to do \yrth less quantities _of fancy .goods*.’ Now that the Dominion ports are open, dealers are of the opinion that the usual supply of Christmas toys, and presents will come to hand in time, tne boats arriving recently from Horae 1 having brought large quantities of toys and other Christmas goods.
