Flogging,,.birching, ,har.d labour, penal servitude, 'alid ‘ (lie' system* will he abolished when the Government’s Criminal .Justice Bill is carried. Prisoners no longer will be called convicts, out of date prisons will be closed, criminal lunatics will become State mental patients, and hostels will be started for young offenders. The abolition of the death penalty for an experimental period of five years was approved by 114 votes to 89 after a short debate on a private member’s motion by Mr S. V. F. Adams. ~ ~ Experts state that there is no question of hanging being abolished because of the vote, which is not mandatory.
