AN UNDESIRABLE
ORDERED TO LEAVE COUNTRY. AUSTRALIAN’S BAD RECORD. CONVICTION FOR VAGRANCY. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. “This man’s Australian record is one of assault and robbery and dope trafficking. He lias a criminal nick-name. Tn addition he lias been convicted for pick-pocketing.” This was the description applied by the police to George Buckingham, an Australian, when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person in that he had insufficient visible means of support. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months by Mr F.. F. Reid, S.M., subject to his leaving for Australia next Tuesday.
Buckingham, said Detective - Sorgt. McClung, was of the type whom it was not desirable to have in the country. Accused, who gave liis occupation as a salesman and showman, came from Australia, and he was well known to the police over there. It would he in the interests of. everybody for Buckingham to get out of the country as he was certainly not the type which was wanted in Christchurch. “We certainly do not want you to come over here,” commented the Magistrate, after hearing a. general account of accused’s character by DetectiveSefgt. McClung. In the meantime he ordered Buckingham to report daily to the police.
From the dock accused said he was prepared to go hack to Australia, and lie understood the police were ready to let him go.
