INTOXICATED IN CARS.

GARAGE PROPRIETOR FINED £3O. AUCKLAND, November 7. Alexander Davie, aged 50, a garage proprietor, admitted in the Magistrate s Court a charge of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car in Wellesley Street on Saturday at 8 o’clock. The police said that when crossing an intersection, Davie’s car collided with the rear of . the right-hand portion of a truck driven by a Chinese vegetable hawker. Davie told the Chinese he would pay the damage. Three-quarters of an hour after' the arrest a doctor certified him as slightly intoxicated. He was fined for a similar offence in 1931.

Agreeing with counsel for Davie that each case of the kind should be treated on its merits, the - Magistrate, Mr J. Molding, S.M., said this was a borderline case, in which one felt uncertain whether to send to prison or not.' However, Davis did show appreciation of the position after the accident. Davie was fined £3O, and- disqualified from driving for 12 , months. Davie undertook to take out a prohibition order. '

SEVEN DAYS’ IMPRISONMENT. AUCKLAND, November 7. A charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car at Otahuhu on October. 24 was admitted in the Otahuhu Magistrate’s Court by Charles Bisman, aged 30, a brewer’s hand, when he appeared before Mr F. H. Levien, S.M. Accused was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment and his licence was cancelled for two years.

Tn the Magistrate’s Court at Fairlie to-day, Arthur William King, a teamster, was fined £l7 10s and his licence was suspended till January 1, 1040, on a charge of being found drunk in charge of a car. Arthur Henry Brown, licensee of the Ivimbell Hotcvl, who supplied accused with liquor on a Sunday, the day of the offence, was fined £5. FOURTEEN DAYS IN GAOL. HAMILTON, November 7. Ahikaka Burn, aged 27, a Maori farm hand, of Cambridge, was sentenced to 14 days’ gaol, and his licence was cancelled until Juno 1, 1940, when be pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to being drunk in charge of a car.
