A REDUCTION.

UNEMPLOYMENT RETURN. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, November 4. The unemployment return for October 22, 1938, issued by the Minister for Labour (the Hon. EL. T. Armstrong), including those on the register who are for health or other reasons unfit for employment, discloses a reduction of 13.972, as against the corresponding figure for October 23. 1937. Compared with the position for last month there is a decrease of 366. Details are: Registered, but not on relief, 726; on sustenance awaiting placement. 0; on Scheme No. 5 relief. 519; total 1245. On sustenance, unfit for employment for health or other reasons, but being afforded relief from employment promotion fund, 7964.

For the four-weekly period under review flu* expenditure from the fund under the heading promotion of employment, as distinct from rebel expenditure is estimated at £512,827.
